Look at the Birds!

      Today when I got home from Bible study, I noticed a frenzy of activity in my front yard. There was chattering and movement everywhere. The railing along my front porch was lined with feathered guest who seemed to be guarding something. Occasionally, others would swoop in from nearby trees and cause a ruckus. After watching for a few minutes, I realized why all the commotion. My lovely sunflowers growing in a barrel next to the porch where no longer lifting their faces to the sun. They were drooped and hanging down; dry and shriveled...looking sad. The activity was centered around them!

      The Bluebird guards posted on the railing were waiting their turn to eat the dry seeds inside the flowers. Then out of nowhere a Titmouse would swoop in and timidly sneak a few seeds while hanging upside down.

Then the Goldfinches would fly over and nibble on the leaves.

I was reminded of this verse in the Bible...

"Look at the birds of the air,
for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns;
yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not of more value than they?"
Matthew 6:26

Jesus was reminding us not to worry about tomorrow because our Father will provide for us just as he provides for all His creatures.

He is a good and loving Father, there is no need to worry.

  1. what a wonderful post and a great reminder. We should all learn not to sweat the small stuff but leave everything in God's hands. Today is sufficient in itself. My lesson at the nursing center this week was the exact same scripture you used above. Ecclesiastes 3. Thank you

  3. Beautiful photos to accompany the verse. This was the first year in 10 that we didn't have bluebirds...I miss their splash of color in the garden!

  8. What great photos.And such a sweetly encouraging post. I do love our sunflowers, even on bad years like this one turned out to be - both for the fun of the Sunflower House AND for seeing all the little critters enjoy them after they have "died." And what a lovely picture that is for us of our lives - when we are getting older and seem useless, there's still plenty for God to use us for, including prayer for our families, striving towards the goal of leaving a sweet spiritual legacy in the hearts and minds of our grandkids, encouraging others, etc. And when the sunflowers are fully dead - they have the seeds of new life in them- just as we have new life for an eternity with our awesome God. :)

  13. I am a sunflower fan. My kitchen and DR decor is in this bright flower. So I enjoyed the pics and the way you applied the scripture to what you were observing.
